When Natural Needs Support-Blending Holistic and Conventional Care for Pets
Posted by Jewel on Jun 25, 2025
As someone deeply committed to natural pet care, I’ve always chosen herbal, homeopathic, and energetic remedies as my go-to support system. But lately, I’ve been reminded that sometimes we need to be flexible—especially when our animals are facing something acute or persistent.
This year has brought two big reminders for me:
-
A tough, persistent flea season
-
A new puppy (JuJu) dealing with parasites
Both situations reminded me of something important: There are times when it makes sense to integrate conventional medicine into our holistic approach.
What Does "Integrative Pet Care" Mean?
Integrative pet care means using natural methods as your foundation, while also allowing space for conventional treatments when absolutely necessary. It’s not about abandoning our values—it’s about doing what’s best for the animal in front of us.
Sometimes, natural remedies work beautifully. Other times, especially when something is severe or not responding quickly, bringing in a conventional tool can help turn the tide—and we can continue to support the healing process with holistic care alongside it.
JuJu’s Story: When Natural Wasn’t Enough
JuJu, my new puppy, only 2 lbs of her began having digestive issues. I was raw feeding her and it seemed like she was thriving on it but I could tell something was not right with her digestion. I used homeopathy, slippery elm, colloidal silver, probiotics, and my own herbal dewormer amoung other natural support. But her symptoms persisted, and my instincts told me something deeper was going on.
A fecal test confirmed Giardia, a stubborn parasite that can be difficult to clear with natural remedies alone. At that point, I made the decision to use a conventional antiparasitic medication to resolve the infection quickly and safely. I also cut out the raw feeding for a bit to give her cooked chicken and sweet potato to help with digestion with some added probiotics, herbs, colostrum, muchrooms etc. spread out in 3-4 meals a day.
I continued:
-
Supporting her immune system with colloidal silver
-
Using probiotics and herbs to rebuild her gut health
-
Monitoring her energy, appetite, and overall vibe closely, she is already feeling great again!
This was a clear case of using the best of both approaches—conventional for the immediate issue, holistic for long-term support and prevention.
The Flea Challenge: Another Lesson in Flexibility
This has been one of the worst flea seasons I can remember. Despite consistent use of natural methods—essential oils, diatomaceous earth, salt and borax, washing bedding and dogs constantly, etc. while doing all this yard sprays, daily vacuuming, steaming plus feeding, ACV, herbs, garlic and yeast—the fleas were still around. It became clear that my pets were uncomfortable and their quality of life was suffering.
After trying every natural option available, I made the decision to to treat the yard with a eco friendly yet chemical based insect repellent and give a dose of capstar for a short period—just enough to help break the cycle. From there, I returned to my natural routine with detox support, energy balancing, and immune-building strategies.
What I’ve Learned—and What I Hope You Take With You
-
Holistic pet care is a lifestyle and a foundation—not a rigid rule.
-
There is no shame in using what works when your pet is in distress.
-
Sometimes the most natural choice is the one that brings relief and stability, even if that includes a conventional method.
-
We can still come back to nature—to rebuild, restore, and realign.
At HolisticPetCare.com, my mission is to empower you with tools that support health from the inside out. That includes acknowledging that sometimes, integration is the smartest and kindest choice—especially when our pets are counting on us to do what’s best for them.
If you’re ever navigating a similar path, I hope this helps you feel grounded in knowing that choosing integrative care is still deeply holistic—because it’s rooted in love, wisdom, and discernment.
