About Our Colloidal Silver for Pets
Customers are always asking me about what is the best quality of colloidal silver. Honestly there is a lot of myths and mis-information out there on the internet about colloidal silver these days. There are many marketing ploys that surprise me everytime I see them. If you are interested in learning more about this read more on the long version here: COLLOIDAL SILVER CONTROVERSY- however this is the short version:
The average particle size of our Colloidal Silver is 0.008 microns, or 0.8 nanometers which allows for easy utilization by the animal or human--and easy excretion from the cells and pet's body. Our colloidal silver is a combination of Ionic silver and nano-particle or micro-particle colloidal silver. The most usable kind of silver for an animal or human body.
Ionic form of colloidal silver is composed of tiny positively-charged atomic or molecular particles of silver that have been liberated from metallic silver using low-voltage electricity.
You may not realize it, but the ionic form of colloidal silver is the same naturally occurring form of silver found in food plants such as wheat, edible mushrooms, edible sea vegetables (Nori, Kombu, Wakame, Arame, Hijiki, Dulse) and others.
You see, plants absorb minerals from the ground or from the water through their root systems or other nutrient intake systems. And they quickly convert these minerals into their ionic form.
The ionic form that's the most readily bio-available...the most biologically active...and therefore the most useful and beneficial in the body for both humans and animals that eat the plants.
So Mother Nature makes sure that minerals are in their most bioavailable form in our food plants, so we'll get the most out of them, nutritionally speaking, when we eat them.
In spite of what's been said on the internet, both metallic silver suspensions and ionic silver suspensions are "colloidal silver". After all, they're both composed of tiny particles of silver suspended homogeneously and indefinitely in a liquid solution.
The big difference between the two is that the metallic form of colloidal silver is composed of tiny, bare metal particles of elemental silver, while the ionic form of colloidal silver is composed of tiny positively-charged atomic or molecular particles of silver that have been liberated from metallic silver using low-voltage electricity.
Both are "colloids", with the bare metal elemental silver suspension being a metallic colloid, and the ionic silver suspension being a colloidal electrolyte (due to the electrically charged atomic and molecular particles of silver).
This is why both forms – metallic and ionic – have been universally called "colloidal silver" for the past 100-plus years, until only recently when purveyors of the metallic form began claiming only theirs could be called a "true colloid". It's a great marketing gimmick. But scientifically speaking, the claim is a farce.
The metallic silver suspensions are colloids. And the ionic silver suspensions are colloids.
Again, one is a colloidal suspension of tiny metal particles of silver. And one is a colloidal suspension of tiny electrically-charged ionic particles of silver just like you’d find naturally in edible plants.
So the bottom line...Ionic silver works best against pathogens in the animal's body because, unlike metallic silver, it carries a positive electrical charge, while bacteria carry a negative electrical charge, causing silver ions to have a strong affinity for both gram negative and gram positive bacteria.
Should Colloidal Silver be Clear or Colored?
No matter what you may have heard or read on the internet about the color of colloidal silver- it is all about marketing so be aware. The highest quality colloidal silver should be clear.
- The particles of silver are to big in size - which will make the product much less effective and doesn't absorb through the cell walls.
- If the silver losses its colloidal state (suspension) and precipitates out of the solution (will have a black/brown color) the product will lose its efficacy and should be disposed of - contrary to what some people advise, shaking the solution will not bring the particles back to a colloidal state.
- If food coloring or other coloring agents have been used
- If the product was made with a more crude battery method
- Do not purchase or use colloidal silver that have any of these characteristics as they are inferior in quality!
Should Colloidal Silver Be Stored in a Glass Bottle?
A great deal of controversy has arisen in the market place on the question of whether it is better to store silver solutions in glass versus plastic containers. There is a misconception that has prevailed in the market place that glass is better.
The idea that glass containers are better for storing products that contain silver has never been proven scientifically. In fact, it has been reported in other studies that glass may have a detrimental effect on silver products. It turns out that the silver is attracted to or magnetized to the sides of the glass causing it to 'plate out' on glass- therefore losing potency. While some manufacturers of Colloidal Silver make a point to say that their product be stored in only dark glass bottles, this is not the case for a quality produced colloidal silver such as the one we sell on Holistic Pet Care’s website.
It is only necessary to store it in dark glass when it is a protein fortified and inferior, unstable product. Which will eventually plate out on the glass as well and lose potency.
We bottle ours in PET Cobalt Blue bottles. Glass is not necessary and it is actually proven that silver is better stored in plastic although you can store it in glass after you receive it if you prefer, it is not going to lose potency if you use it up fairly soon after transferring it to the glass jar.
Colloidal Silver that breaks down when exposed to light or falls out of suspension when stored in plastic is inferior and is not recommended. Our Colloidal Silver for Pets does not have these issues and maintains it’s integrity for very long periods in PET Cobalt Blue bottles.
