Raw Feeding: Crucial to Naturopathic Health for Pets

Raw Feeding: Crucial to Naturopathic Health for Pets

Posted by Rhonda Jewel on Aug 09, 2018

Dogs and cats are carnivores. As such, they should be eating a diet of raw meat. Equally as important, it should be pasture raised or organically fed, or wild animals whenever possible.

Animals don’t cook their foods. Your dog needs raw muscle meat, organs, fatty tissue, and bones.

When carnivores eat the diet they are meant to consume everything in their bodily system balances out. The inflammation goes away, the red and white blood cells normalize and everything comes into a type of internal harmony. The body is vitalized and the frequency and natural vibration goes up into the range where dis-ease cannot exist anymore. This is why that raw feeding is the cornerstone of natural pet care.

People are very passionate when it comes to the subject of what they feed their dogs, and with good reason. A good diet can contribute to a long and healthy life and even psychological well-being for our pets.

As a long time holistic health practitioner for both people and pets I have experienced that diet is key and the cornerstone of health in general.

I started raw feeding dogs over 20 years ago and realized that raw feeding was the only way to having a carnivore pet live a long healthy life without major vet bills as they age.

When I studied with the American Council of Naturopathy for Animals and got my certification – Everything I had always taught and believed was completely confirmed about natural health for dogs and cats. As they were adamant about raw prey model feeding with no added veggie. This is the cornerstone of health for carnivore pets.

Both felines and canines are carnivores and need raw meat to thrive.Yes, we do know they have adapted to a cooked, denatured lifestyle over many generations. As direct descendants of wolves and wild cats, dogs and cats are simply not genetically optimized to consume the 50% carbohydrate content of today’s commercial kibbles. And this is before we discuss the scandalous amount of kidney disease, pancreatitis and cancer occurring in dogs today.

What Should Dogs be Eating?

Dogs are carnivores. As such, they should be eating a diet of meat. Equally as important, it should be raw. Animals don’t cook their foods. Your dog needs raw muscle meat, organs, fatty tissue, and bones.

Types of Raw Diets

There are two major types of raw diets: commercial and home-prepared. Commercial raw diets, which may be fresh, freeze dried, dehydrated or frozen, supply all of the dog’s requirements and are typically in a meat patty form.

Home-prepared raw diets usually consist of raw meat, organs and bones, some added supplements. ( We don’t recommend any added veggies or fruits or other carbs) These diets may not be balanced each day but, if designed properly, should meet the dog’s requirements over the long term.

A raw dog food diet is designed to mimic a dog’s natural ancestral menu. The whole concept of raw feeding is based upon a dog’s instinctive carnivorous bias — a built-in desire to capture (or find) and eat another animal.

As unsavory as it may seem, it is completely natural for a wolf to consume the entire animal.

Meat, bones, organs, fur, guts and all.

What Shouldn’t Dogs be Eating?

Carbohydrates: such as fruits, veggies, and grains. Carbs may be somewhat nutritious for omnivores and herbivores, but carnivores don’t benefit from these nutrients in the same way that we do. What’s the point of feeding your dog these foods if they cannot properly digest and assimilate the nutrition from them?

Again, fruits and veggies are not altogether bad; they contain many wonderful nutrients. Alot of raw feeding sites recommend them and most raw commercial have them added because they are cheaper than meat.

In the most part won’t make your dogs sick or harm them. ( unless they are already dealing with an inflammatory condition) The problem lies in the fact that they don’t really digest them and cannot properly absorb the vital nutrients they need from them- and if your dog is health compromised in anyway, they can add to the inflammation in the system due to carbs turning into sugars – so they end up being a moot point and actually not a good idea.

Cooked foods: Your dogs were meant to eat raw foods. They have the digestive system, stomach acid, and bacteria killing agents for a reason: to handle these foods. Cooking destroys the vitamin, mineral, and enzyme content that is needed! Also beware; cooked bones are more likely to splinter and cause hazards for your dog. They are equipped to consume raw foods and should only be eating raw meat and bones.

Processed foods: Processed foods are unhealthy and are not good for any living animal. They are poor nutrition at best.

And did I mention poop?

No body likes the awful smelly kibble poops! The poop from raw fed dogs has a mild odor and non-offensive actually.

The stool is the window of digestion.

As a raw diet is easier to digest than cooked food, it leads to improved digestion, meaning less faeces. Stools from raw dog food also smell nothing like the stools from dry dog food, another great benefit.

Raw Fed Dogs Produces Less Waste, Thus Easier to potty train and they have healthier, better kidneys.

To sum it up, meat and bone are the ideal diet for both dogs and cats.

The dry food diets are simply not working out for them.

Usually the next question is, is feeding raw dog food expensive?

To answer this, it is necessary to figure out how much a dog needs each day and then find ways to obtain meat from reliable sources at the best prices. I honestly will admit it takes some ground work to switch to raw feeding this way in the beginning and some time keeping up with it. Just like it does when you have a human child. There is going to be work and money involved in feeding your family right.

Even while many vets are still quick to warn of dire consequences to those feeding raw it is still not as widely accepted as it still relatively new to many pet parents and vets alike.

However, as more and more people feed their dogs a raw diet, it is becoming clear that most dogs have no problem digesting raw bones and pathogens that would put you and me in hospital.

My dogs have been raw fed for many years. I rarely see any type of health problems unless it is an accident. Never illness or never do I concern myself with any types of diseases- our pack is so healthy, happy and high vibe, health is their way of life.
